How soon after an injury should I see a physiotherapist?

The sooner the better. Early assessment means we can confirm what's actually happened, rule out anything that needs imaging or a different referral, and get you started on the right approach right away. Waiting too long, or relying on rest alone, often means the nervous system and surrounding muscles start compensating in ways that slow your recovery or set you up for re-injury. As a general rule: if you're unsure, get it assessed. A short first appointment can save you weeks of guessing.

How do I know if my injury needs physiotherapy or will heal on its own?

Some injuries do resolve with rest, but the tricky part is that "feeling better" and "being fully healed" aren't the same thing. Pain can decrease well before the underlying tissue, nerve function, and movement patterns have actually recovered. If you're dealing with swelling, limited range of motion, weakness, instability, pain that's not improving after a few days, or any injury that happened during a sport or repetitive activity, it's worth getting a proper assessment rather than waiting it out. The goal isn't just to get you out of pain, it's to make sure the whole system is working properly so it doesn't become a recurring problem.

What injuries do you treat?

We work with a wide range of musculoskeletal and sports injuries, including knee pain, back pain, hip pain, shoulder injuries, ankle sprains, concussions, and vertigo. We also treat post-surgical rehabilitation, overuse injuries, stress fractures, and injuries that haven't fully resolved with previous treatment. If you're not sure whether your injury is something we can help with, reach out and we'll let you know!

Do you treat concussions?

Yes. Concussion recovery is one of the areas where a neurofunctional approach makes a real difference. We assess how the nervous system is responding after a head injury, which affects everything from balance and vision to cognition and headaches. Treatment is individualized based on your symptoms and where you are in the recovery process, with the goal of getting you back to school, work, and sport safely and efficiently.

Can physiotherapy help with vertigo and dizziness?

Yes, and it's one of the most underutilized applications of physiotherapy. Vertigo is often caused by a problem in the vestibular system, the part of your inner ear and nervous system that controls balance and spatial orientation. Vestibular physiotherapy uses specific assessment and repositioning techniques to address the root cause rather than just managing the symptom. Many people who have been living with dizziness or vertigo for months see significant improvement within just a few sessions.

What does an injury rehab appointment at East Mill Physio look like?

Your first appointment starts with a thorough interview and whole-body neurofunctional assessment, so we understand not just the injury site but how your nervous system, movement patterns, and overall health are contributing to the picture. You'll also receive treatment at your first appointment, not just an assessment. From there, each session combines hands-on treatment, neurofunctional acupuncture where appropriate, and individualized exercise work, and we reassess continuously throughout so we're making real, measurable changes every time you come in.

Can you help me return to sport after surgery?

Yes, post-surgical rehabilitation is a significant part of what we do. Whether you've had shoulder, knee, hip, or another surgery, getting back to full sport readiness requires more than just healing at the tissue level. We assess how your nervous system has responded to surgery (things like nerve inhibition after being in a sling or immobilized are very common and often overlooked), rebuild strength and movement patterns from the ground up, and work toward sport-specific function so you return confident, not just cleared.
